Trinidad – Haul out in Peake

Haul out Peake’s

Wednesday 27th September

We’re hauling out a 1pm today so we have time to go and check in with Peake’s boatyard, Daniella is charming and helpful and most amazingly has the loveliest Welsh accent we’ve ever heard. Not sure how she managed this without having set a foot in Wales!  She gives us a few pointers on what to do on the island if we get the time away from the yard. The yard is pleasant, the shower facilities extremely nice with hot water and I get very excited about the beautiful washing machines, especially when I work out that each wash is only costing £1,60! Cheapest in the Caribbean!

The haul out is on time and a diver is sent down to check where the straps of the lift should go…never seen that before, guess they not taking any chances.

We are soon up on the lift and not quite ready for the disappointing sight; given that we had our bottom cleaned 4 months ago in Martinique, we were not expecting the level of growth we found on the hull, waterline and more impressively on the prop blades. We had used International Interlux anti foul but obviously not good enough quality. The other worrying thing is that the anode at the end of the prop is not there anymore. The screws have also disappeared so it has not eroded away, more likely they were not tight enough so the anode fell off. This starts the bells ringing, if such a simple thing is not done properly, did the rest of the work on the prop we had done in le Marin up to par?

We are soon wedged between 2 beautiful fifty footers on the hard. Talk about making us feeling inadequate. We have some decision to make; the antifoul obviously needs redoing and frankly having done it ourselves only so recently, we don’t really feel like it. We know it will take us 4 days and whilst we are doing that, nothing else will get done. After speaking to the professionals, it turns out that having it done is not has dear as we thought, we get the VAT off the anti foul and  a discount which mostly cover for the cost of the guy doing it, so that what we are going to do.
