Tobago – Englishman bay

Sunday 8th October

Englishman bay

We are woken up by church bells early this morning. We do not intend to linger here but we are now stuck. The ferry seems ready to go and we do not fancy being in the middle of the channel with him, too narrow, so we have to wait for him to clear off before we can head out. We have a choice of 2 or 3 anchorages on the way up. As it turns out, we decide on Englishman bay, it looks sheltered on the chart and the description of the bay in the Doyle’s guide is attractive. We have a nice sail up, close enough to the shore to have a good look. The wind id piping up and dark clouds are gathering. By the time we are ready to anchor in Englishman bay, the surf is up and the rain and wind are ready for us too. Typical. Still we managed it, the good thing is there is no one in the bay except pelicans, plenty of swing room and the nasty rocks on both side are safely far away. The beach looks lovely at dusk, and by the time the sun set, we have the most beautiful colours in the sky. Probably one of the best sunset. The light show does not end there. The locals have decided to have a party on the beach and a huge fire is lit. It seems to have trouble keeping so you can see them chucking petrol over it at regular interval. We waited for the music to start but none came. The fire died down soon enought and we were really alone in the dark. But we had the most beautiful stars at night and a firefly display in the trees all around us.

Monday 9th October

I am woken up early by the chatter of the birds. The fishermen are out soon after. There must be 6 or 7 boats trying to net fishes in this small bay. It does not look from where I am sitting that it is that successful, not many full nets are hauled back in. We have to make the most of this beach it just look perfect. Perfect for the hammocks to go up. We spent the day reading, daydreaming and watching the birds swoop for their dinner in the sea. The beach had a few visitors but you could count them on both hands. Not so good for the little lady in the shack who is trying to make a living selling food, drinks and other craft. Another lovely evening on board in the most perfect bay.
