Statia – Up the Quill

Walk up the Quill

Saturday 3rd Feb 18

Right, ready to go up the volcano.  The first part of the walk is very pleasant, under the shade of the trees.  And it is well signposted and colour coordinated, maybe we did not need the $15 survey map in the end. But a proper map does make Ian feel better.  Loads of birds, butterflies, hermit crabs and we even see a snake doing its slithering thing. We climb up to the rim of the volcano intending to go down the crater, but the path going down has been closed, so we go up instead to follow the top. For a while anyway, it soon becomes a bit too steep for me despite the positioning of ropes. Plus we can’t really see anything but the path in front of us, no views of the crater nor the sea.  It is getting late better head back down after lunch. Back to level ground, we have some time to carry on to the white cliff we saw from the sea. Impressive, although I do not dare going too close, it is a long way down and the ground is very dry and unstable. Nice walk though, very pleasant, and we had the whole place to ourselves, we only met one person all day. Plenty of hermit crabs though all in the most fabulous shells!
