Barbados – Speightown

Wednesday 11th October

St Charles Port

We set off early, with 110 miles to go; we think that we will need 24 hours to complete the passage. The wind is in the right direction but we are close hauled, which is fine, we are used to this. We had a great sail, averaging consistently over 7 knots all the way with sometimes peaks at 8. And we had dolphins as we approach St Charles Port. It is too early for the officialdom when we get there at dawn, so we park ourselves on the fuel pontoon to wait. We got seen around 10am, more forms filling, but I must say the officials were probably the nicest. There are only 2 anchorages we can use. Here and Carlisle bay near Bridgetown, another 10 miles south. We need to have a rest so we anchor off Speightown. Nice to look at from here, the sea is turquoise blue, white sandy beach, a white church tower and colourful buildings all along the shore. Too tired to go explore today, it will have to wait.

Friday 13th  October

Little trip to shore to explore Speightown, we have to beach the dinghy as the pier is out of action. Always a fun thing to do when the surf is up. Lovely looking town, quite busy mid morning with shoppers.  This is the most colourful place ever. Love it.  Maybe it is because there is a lot of pink about, even the church is hot pink. It is not very big and the seafront is so pretty. As for the sea, its turquoise is dazzling. The beaches out of town are just fabulous, white sand and waves breaking on the reefs. We do a bit of shopping, street vendors have good fruits and vegs selection although the prices are probably double what we are used to.
