Antigua – English Harbour

Wednesday 15th November

Passage Guadeloupe to Antigua

The passage from Guadeloupe to Antigua is an easy one, enough wind to have the sails all the way at a sedate pace. Still no sighting of whales! So disappointing! Montserrat was looming ever so close, stunning views especially with the sun setting right behind it. Our first glimpse of Antigua… a cluster of low lush green hills and very few buildings on this side of the island.  We sought refuge for the night in English Harbour. Night had fallen when we made our approach of the entrance and fortunately all the beacons and lights were working. The anchorage itself seemed a bit tight, plenty boats in there but we found just enough room about 200m from the reef…we could see the waves breaking in the moonlight and hear them crash on the rocks. Our rubber anchor held  and we managed a good night sleep

Thursday 16th November

In the daylight, we realised how small the bay is and how close we were from both the reef and the next boat. We’d never had done it in broad daylight. Still it does look scenic with the old buildings and the fort at the entrance of the bay…can’t wait to explore around here… Nelson’s Dockyard sounds fantastic… but not for now. We have an appointment with Lynn and Peter in Jolly harbour. They should have arrived and are probably busy getting Christine to go back in the water.

We had a fabulous sail up the coast, nice wind, racing with any boat going the same way as us. And we won against a bigger one than us. Jolly harbour is absolutely stunning, one of the prettiest bay and harbour. Going in to check in we ogle all the posh and less posh properties right on the water.  No high rise, all very nicely done, loads of trees and low hills provide the background bright green against the dazzling blue of the sky and the sea. After completing the formalities, we get back to the anchorage. We spend the rest of the day taking in our gorgeous surroundings and trying to get in touch with Lynn and Peter.
