Excitement in Prickly

Thursday 31st Aug

We are woken up at 5am by shouting in the bay. A catamaran anchored very close to the shore seems to be the origin of the shouting. Loads of swearing can be heard echoing around the bay, the dinghy is mentioned but it is not quite clear what the problem is and Ian thinks it may be a domestic. There is no traffic on the VHF so the person shouting is not calling the coast guards or anyone else for help, which is a bit odd as the coast guard are only 5mn away. After more shouting and swearing it became apparent that someone was trying to steal his dinghy. We could only hear the shouting man and It really got scary when he said that he was going to blow his head, assuming it was the thief’s head. At this stage, Ian has no desire to go and see what is going on…we do not know what kind of weapon the thief is being threatened with: could be a gun (illegal in Grenada), or a spear gun…; don’t want to be on the wrong end of any of those. The kerfuffle soon dies down, it sound like the thief has swam away and the dinghy has been returned. Still no traffic on the VHF, the incident is not reported. Ian is not sure what to say to the coast guard, so he does not call them,

Around 7am, the coast guards are out, trying to find what was the incident about and which boat was involved. Not sure how they got to hear about it but they are going from boat to boat. We got a ticking off for not calling them, guess everyone did and not a word is said about what we heard. If the man got a gun he could be in trouble. As it turns out, he was talking about a flare gun, that would have been just as nasty as a gun, probably worse if he had used it!

We have visitors in the afternoon, Catherine and Patrick from Santa Barbara come for afternoon tea. We et them this morning on the bus to the supermarket and it turned out that we had had a chat on the pontoon of St Anne in Martinique a few months ago.

Friday 1st September

Francine and Allan are leaving for Guyana at the weekend, so we arrange a BBQ beach party for them. Loads of people turned up it was brilliant, even Sam and Steve (wanderlust) walked from secret Harbour, a good walk! It was absolutely the best attended BBQ we had on this beach this season. At some point we had 2 babies and 4 dogs! Good fun was had by all. We are going to miss them dreadfully.
