Fakarava – Harifi Beach

Pakora anchorage

Wind is in a better position, so we can go south and make progress. It is only for 10 miles, a couple of hours under engine, but at least we did not get wet. It is nice when we get there but unfortunately the weather deteriorates very quickly, before the day is over. Shame I was quite looking forward to a bit of snorkeling. No way am I going in there with this weather.

We only expect to be here one night only on our way to the south anchorage where we want to snorkel the passe. As it turns out we spend 4 nights there in the wind and rain. Still it was nice we met Katta, Marian and Bjorn, from Norway and had a nice evening with them and some of their friends. It looks better this morning. Again we try to escape, within 2 miles we are turning back, it is atrocious, the rain closes in and you can see nothing. As we need to stay in the channel, it is quite scary when land and posts reappear briefly, not where you were expecting them either. Very disorientating. And we are drenched so back we went. Again our buoy is still free.

South passe - Hirifa

Glad we waited the weather is perfect today for our 20 miles going south, sun is shining and the wind enables us to sail most of the way, and best of all it is dry and warm. Half way we stop in the middle of nowhere to have morning coffee with Roos and Hans from vagabond, lovely to see them we exchange news and tips,   gawp at their marquesians tattoo, stroked Bo the cat and off they went north while we carried on south. Wind is stiff down there and strengthen overnight. Not a nice place to be there is no shelter at all and it will be impossible to snorkel the pass for a few days… rough night, in the morning we decide to follow jollydogs and Bruno's Girl

to the eastern anchorage where there is more shelter. And good decision that was the wind is howling and the rain is relentless at this very moment in time. Glad we went ashore yesterday for a walk with the dogs and did the socializing thing last night on Jollydogs, with Bruno's Girl, another stupendous fish curry, and plenty of stories.
