Trinidad – Hike up the Cumaca river

Graeme turned up on Sunday morning at 8am, Ian wanted to go do some more hiking. We went to the north of the island this time, aiming for the Cumaca river. We crossed many villages and arable lands, all with a distinct Indian flavours, colourful flags in front of every houses, fluttering in the breeze. We spend the morning in the river, sometimes up to our thighs, right up the waterfall. The scenery was absolutely fantastic, it made a nice spot for lunch and Graeme, Englishman, who had lived on the island for more than 25 years was a mine of information and excellent company. He took us to the Hollis reservoir up in the mountain, it was shut to the public now, but the security guard let us in and escorted us around the ground. Fantastic landscape full of birds but so quiet. We sat under an almond tree, drinking it all in. The guard fell some coconuts for us which was nice too. The ride back was made interesting by a big thunder storm… I do love to see the clouds gather and move across the land.
