St Martin – Mardi Gras Parade

Tuesday 13th Feb 18

Main Carnival Parade

Tuesday is the main parade, and as per usual, I want to be there well before they start. Again buses are not around and we get another random lift, Shame, he is not as talkative as the first. We finally find the place where everyone is mustering a long way out of town, by the oil depot. Makes quite an interesting backdrop to the riot of colours and feathers. Not sure how the revellers are going to cope with the wind today, they might just take off. We’ve been clocked by the local TV and we both get interviewed.  It is a DJ and truck thing, more like the Grenada carnival than Martinique. Once again, everyone is represented, the Indian community is not as colourful nor as lively as could be expected, but they are not shy to join the following group with their instrument, mingling their tunes. The Spanish speaking community is doing its best to get the party going with my kind of music too.  By the time everyone is back on the waterfront it is dark and the concert is only a few minutes away, The place is mobbed and good fun is had by all despite intermittent rain which sent everyone for cover intermittently.  Finding a taxi tonight is a bit more dicey and my friend the policeman is not able to help... so we wait for a long while... when one turns up he quotes us a price twice as much as the price we paid for the 3 previous nights and he is not very pleasant with it either. You would have thought they would welcome the business and be gracious.
