St Martin – Kids Carnival

Sunday 11th Feb 18

Kid’s Carnival Parade

Sunday is the Kids Parade, always a winner.  No buses so we set off prepared to walk all the way. As it turns out we are picked up by  a very nice lady who is traffic controller at the airport. We were told that the parade would only be a fraction of the usual size and yes, there are not many groups but they go at it all day and for a good chunk of the evening too. The most notable thing is the mix of people.  A real Benetton advert, it is fabulous to see. Even the Chinese community is represented and their performance is outstanding, even with the wind playing havoc with the costumes. Glad to see that the  St Martin Smile Again motto is on display everywhere today. The streets are packed with onlookers, but not many joined in or have made the effort to dress up (guess this was a Martinique thing).  The police presence is quite noticeable. So many young people. The parade ends up on the waterfront again, and a concert soon starts.  Finding a taxi to take us back is a bit of an issue, fortunately, one of the friendly policemen conjures one up for us.
