St Martin Carnival – The last lap

Wednesday 14th Feb 18
Last lap Carnival evening and Valentine’s
We celebrate with a drink on the waterfront in Marigot, and even some accras. The waiter is obviously jaded by 5 days and night of carnival and he is keen for it to finish…
Tonight id dancing in the street behind the trucks… only 2 of them with distinct crowds following them. We pick the last one as there is more people dancing behind it, but soon we feel like we got in the wrong crowd, we are with the teenagers. The kids are a bit boisterous, some of them have their faces covered and the smell of pot is overwhelming. One of the kids turns on Ian for some reason, his mates are pulling him away… time to move on ….It does take us a while to extricate ourselves from this crowd, but as soon as we catch up with the other truck, it is far less high octane. All ages, with many older ladies and loads of small children… the music is also less frantic and far more fun with the DJ mingling in the crowd and playing with them. We must have done 2 laps of the town, before we get back to the waterfront for more music on the stage. The king is ready to be burnt on the water. He does not draw such a huge throng apart from the kids and us.
It’s getting late, better grab a cab and go home…well this time my friend the policemen can’t help and after waiting for a while we walk it…. not so far in fact in less than half an hour we are back in the marina. Lovely walk under the stars, with the twinkling lights on the lagoon.
