Cartagena Old Town

Friday 21st December 18

Jacqui and David have arrived during the night so we go and meet them just as they were re-anchoring  closer... we actually boarded as they were under motion... first for me, very exciting.

The formalities in Colombia have to go through an agent, so we go and meet one who is just hanging around at the marina bar...takes away our passports and just go and deal with the officialdom while we go and explore the town.

The walk to the old town is only  15mn, and there is plenty shops and restaurants within 5 mn of the marina, we even found a nice supermarket, very reasonable prices.

The old town is just exactly like we imagined, a walled city with ramparts facing the sea, beautiful colonial buildings, churches, museums, street vendors, horses and carriages  and music at every corner. Loved the shaded  piazzas, nice shops, people everywhere. Very attractive and clean and full of Christmas decorations. Although there are loads of street vendors they are not so persistent.

And then there are the stunning doors, interesting knockers and colourful flowers. Brilliant. We came back to the town at night, and sure enough the place is mobbed, and the Christmas lights are just so over the top, each street has its own style, each square is decorated differently. And the night market is brilliant. The tat is definitely better quality than anywhere else we have been. There are children everywhere too, with shows for them in the main square . It really feels like Christmas is for them as it should be.
