Early Morning Market – Port of Spain

Early morning market

Saturday 30th September

We are up at 6am this morning, Jesse James has organised the weekly trip to the Port of Pain central market, and you need to be there early. It is the first time we venture out of the yard, so it is very exciting. Port of Spain is about half an hour away and you can see the tower blocks on the edge of the water. Chaguaramas is virtually a  dead end road, used to be the US military base during WWII. Hence the industrial feel. The road follows the coast right up into town. The market is not where I was expecting it to be. It is actually on the hedge of town, in a low density area. The main offering is fruits and veg and what as display they put on. Fantastic colours and arrangements; Full marks for presentation, a lot of effort has gone into showing off the produce to their best advantage. The crowd is just as colourful. Quite an animated morning market. Prices are really cheap.

Spices, eggs and a small amount of meat and fish are also featuring in a separate building, along with the dry stores. A few stalls are also selling clothes and shoes, newspapers, flowers and my favourite live aquarium fishes. He actually does a roaring trade, every time we pass by, he is selling a fish or 2.

Well worth getting up early for.
