About Town – St George 2

Sunday 20 Aug to Thursday 24 Aug

The rain comes and goes for the next few days, so we do not do much over the rest of the week end. Ian is knocking off a few indoors jobs, like wiring and trying to fix the electric water pump.

We are both fascinated by the amount of huge commercial vessels docking in St George. There is at least one loading and unloading a day. Fascinating to watch them enter the channel (some our fellow yatchies are woken up early to move by the pilot, too close to the channel). Being so close to the commercial port, the water is surprisingly clear, we can see the bottom, only very little litter, a few bottles and other rubbish is floating around and even then not every day. I see more turtles floating around than garbage. Love the early morning when the sea and sky merge together, completely smooth water without a ripple, except the ones made by the turtles coming up for air. The water is so clear that we can watch the fishes swimming all around us from the deck. Veal the 3 masts old vessel is in the bay and conveniently placed, right with the sunset behind, makes for some beautiful pictures at sun down.

We get to know the schedule of all the boats coming and going, the Rum Runner I and Rum Runner II, music full blast, taking revellers for sunset cruises and night cruises, Shadowfax leaving early in the morning for its tour of the island, lovely catamaran under sail, tehe dive boats and the fishing boats. Never a dull moment.

We make another foray into town, I really want fresh fish, and we need to pick up the tablet which unfortunately is not repairable. The town is not very busy is not very busy this morning, nor is the market. Only 5 or 6 stalls are selling fish, A lot of scaling in going on on one side, many colourful fishes, no ideas what they are, and an enormous piece of tuna is on display, bigger than me. The lady has a bit of a job cutting it with a huge knife and a mallet. We are going to enjoy this.

It is already Wednesday, can’t believe how quick the time goes. We plan to go back to Prickly Bay on Friday afternoon, after I’ve picked up my dress. We allow ourselves a day off at the beach. Although there is a beach we could swim to from our anchorage, it is small, and the sand is black rather than golden. It is a long way to Grand Anse, and it does take us a while but it is well worth it, the water is so clear and warm. We even have a tree (not many of them on this miles long beach), to hang the hammock. The beach is quite busy, school holiday is still on for another week or so, the beach is teaming with kids having fun. Lovely hot sunny day.
