Anguilla – Road Bay – Dec 17

Road Bay
Monday 4th December 17
Not such a long passage today, 30 miles to go to Anguilla, We did extremely well arriving in early afternoon in Road Bay. Again Anguilla has been battered by hurricane Irma and it shows. The anchorage is empty, we are the only yacht. The beach front is deserted and some bars and restaurants have been damaged but not as extensively as we were expecting. However, it does look forlorn, people are missing so many places are shut. We do find a bar open with a couple of customers in. Quickly the conversation turns to Irma. It will take a while for the scars to disappear. Between the old lady and the young girl we are talking to, we rally get a sense of how terrifying it was to live through this. Most of the infrastructure is now back in place, but the resorts are empty, no tourists means no jobs and no income for the islanders. That is not going to help. What a difference with St Barts.
Tuesday 5th December 17
The plan was to explore some small deserted islands of Anguilla, but the wind has perked up and there will be no shelter from it. So we decide to move on and aim for St Kitts. It is a long passage (60 miles) but the wind is strong so we fly. Not fast enough though that we have to find the “Telca Marina” in the dark. The entrance is unlit, very small and the information in the book is sketchy to say the least. Fortunately, the security guard is guiding us with his torch. Passing the mouth of the harbour is nerve wracking, especially when we realised that most of the pontoons are missing, the only viable option is to tie up on the lifting berth, hopefully we won’t be in the way tomorrow.
