Visiting Ajaccio

Monday 25th July 2016

We had an extremely good day walking around Ajaccio.  The Citadelle and the vieux port  are at the heart of it and you can see that apart from a few big old villas, it used to be a fashionable place in the late 1800 and beginning of the 20th century, most of the developments are much later with nondescript high rises  filling up all available space. The beaches are fantastic and there are a few bays where you will have a small restaurant and bar on the beach, complete with parasols. The old part of town around the citadel is small but charming with its small alleyways, bar and restaurants taking up the pavement and most of the street. Like all good French city you can’t turn without having a boulangerie  and a tabac at every corner. We managed to see the house where Napoleon Bonaparte was born, although it was shut, so we could not visit it. We did like the statue of him by the grotto, at the top of the hill.

All in all a good day on shore, we had not seen so many people in weeks….
